Trans Rural Life
Episode Description
Cities are often seen as the epicenter of trans culture and activism. But there are trans people living in rural communities across the United States whose unique perspectives are overlooked. This week, Imara takes a deep dive into the challenges and opportunities of trans rural life. First, she’s joined by community educator and advocate, Ray Holloman, who shares why he decided to move to rural Tennessee, the ways his Blackness is more visible than his transness, and how he weighs the risks of raising his family in this part of the country. Next, Imara talks with farmer and advocate Ashley Swartz about what it was like to transition in her small Nebraska town and the miracles she experienced during her journey.
